A graduate student in English from the late 1970s, the reluctance is the choice of study-classical garden design Emma grew up with a widowed single mother hermit. "We loved each other very much," she said, "and yet so exclusive was that love which was experienced more like fear." Emma is a student living in Paris and as close as her mother, her surroundings are a sexually adventurous librarian, Francoise, and a young writer Michael Reserved. When Emma gets word that his mother died, she rushes home to London in the coming weeks and is in a muted power struggle correspondence with Francoise. Meanwhile, Philip meets Emma Hudson, a surgeon whose taciturn nature rivals his own (and remembers a less exalted Mr. Darcy). But things take part in Emma's life only through the abyss, the silent flow of his shyness and his willingness to what others want to be swallowed. This is not an Austen novel, and a moment of unadulterated joy seems glib to several pages of caution Sere Emma. This makes the novel very much caution, even if the passivity of Emma is sometimes so extreme, it feels concocted to justify only a few sentences more elegant.
